Be here now.
Allow feelings to teach me and allow them to flow.
Everyone in my life is a teacher.
Live with integrity.
Be grateful. For everything.
So healing. So grounding. These concepts and reminders can bring me back every time. Each time I get swept away by a story that I’ve created about a situation or person in my life, these lessons bring me back to myself.
Where did they come from?
Mikao Usui, the founder of Usui Shiki Ryoho: The Usui System of Natural Healing (a.k.a. Reiki), recommended the following poem from the Meiji Emperor. Usui told us that this simple guide helps us to create health and happiness in our lives if we focus on them daily.
Many translations can be found online and in books. I received this version in my Reiki level I training and this is the one I provide to my students:
Reiki produces good health, happiness and security:
Just for today, do not worry
Just for today, do not anger
Honor your parents, teachers, and elders
Earn your living honestly
Show gratitude in everything
~ Mikao Usui
I see many layers of meaning in each of these lines. These principles remind me of “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz. Like the Agreements, these principles are concise, simple, and all encompassing.
This guide can be used by anyone, not just those trained in Reiki. I will address the deeper meaning of each of these principles in up-coming entries.
If you’d like to get started now in creating health and happiness as suggested by Usui, try some of these techniques for working with the principles and let me know how it goes! I’d love to hear about your experience.
2. Repeat a principle three times at each hand position during a Reiki treatment (one principle per hand position).
3. Focus on one principle per month (or day or week). Explore the meaning for yourself through meditation, journaling, Reiki guidance, painting or drawing, talking to other people & Reiki practitioners, reading articles and books which describe ideas about the meaning of the principles.
4. Send Reiki to the principle and meditate. Listen and watch for guidance about how to use it in your life and what it means for you.
5. If focusing on principle at a time, write the principle on a piece of paper and give the paper Reiki (or prayer). Carry the paper with you throughout the day. Meditate momentarily throughout the day when you remember and practice using the principle throughout the day.
