Just For Today, Do Not Worry

Today, we’ll address the first of the 5 Principles of Reiki:  Just for today, do not worry. (I’m working with this one a lot these days!)

Ok.  Here are we are.  Today.  Right now.

Deep breath!  Ahhhh.  Yes, I love it when I remember to be present, and accept rather than resist.  Those of you who are Byron Katie fans might already work with the concept “accept what is.”

In the case of the first Reiki principle, accepting “what is” does not mean rolling over and allowing that which hurts you.  It means telling yourself the truth about “what is” in the moment and then going from there.  Change what you can, let go of what you can (a relationship, perhaps?), and learn how to live with the rest.

Focus on “now.”

The second component of this principle, “do not worry,” is more than it appears.

It is not meant to encourage denial or repression.  It is not intended as a tool for self-flagellation.  It is also not the Judge by which to condemn yourself.

“Do not worry” refers to unnecessary suffering.  We all worry.  Some people worry more than others, but we all worry.

Did you know that the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) has stated that approximately 19.1 million adults in the U.S.  ages 18 to 54 (about 13.3% of people in this age group in a given year) have an anxiety disorder?

Not all of us have an anxiety disorder, but we all know what it’s like to worry and grow that worry into a huge, overwhelming snowball.

This is the part that’s unnecessary.  This principle reminds us to take a step back.  Take a breath.  Come back to the present and take a look at the worry from another angle.

What can it teach you?
Do you need to make a change?
Would it help to have more information?
Is it time to listen to your intuition?
Is there some way that you can take better care of yourself?

Learn what you can from the worry, express it in a healthy way, and let it go.  Come back to this moment.  Resisting or judging the worry only makes it stronger and then you feel worse.

Just for today, take a deep breath and learn what your feelings are telling you.  Then move on.
